Position description

The University of California, Irvine’s Program in Public Health seeks applicants for a full-time tenure-track or tenured (open rank) faculty position in the Department of Health, Society, and Behavior (DHSB). We invite applicants at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level with expertise in any area of nutrition policy, which could include but is not limited to research on food and nutrition programs or policies; diet-related diseases and disparities (e.g., obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease); and food access, systems, or environments. We welcome applications from researchers with programs that directly inform at least one of DHSB’s focus areas: health equity, health behavior, social determinants of health, and health policy.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research and teaching missions of DHSB, and to help shape and expand our growing division of health policy as we transition from a Program to a School of Population and Public Health. Qualifications include exceptional potential or a demonstrated record of publishing high-impact and policy relevant research in nutrition policy and experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students (commensurate with career stage). While not a requirement, the ability to seek and obtain extramural funding is also a strength. Faculty in DHSB teach and mentor students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Master of Public Health (MPH) and Public Health doctoral students in the Disease Prevention and Global Health concentrations. We plan to establish a new MPH in health policy and the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to this new program with their teaching and/or service.

This is a state-funded, 9-month position and the typical teaching load is 2 courses per academic year. All applicants must have a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD, or equivalent) in nutrition, public health, health policy, economics, public policy, sociology, or a closely related field.

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. The Program in Public Health recognizes the value of diversity in its faculty and strongly supports UCI’s mission for equity and inclusiveness. We are committed to ensuring accountability, providing training and education, conducting responsive research and building sustainable partnerships. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Qualified applicants must have the demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of colleagues and to teach and mentor a diverse student body.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidate finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as
part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration.

Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks. The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See Table(s) https://bpb-us-e2.wpmucdn.com/sites.uci.edu/dist/1/1819/files/2022/08/prof-AY.pdf.
