Position description

The University of California, Irvine's Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Scholar. The mission of UCI MIND is to engage in cutting edge, interdisciplinary research designed to discover the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and brain aging, characterize the transition from normal aging to Alzheimer’s disease, and develop new treatments to slow or eliminate cognitive impairment resulting from any etiology. This position is within the UCI Model Organism Development and Evaluation for Late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (MODEL-AD) project. MODEL-AD is a NIA/NIH-funded multi-project, multi-institutional grant whose goal is to produce the next generation of mouse models for late-onset AD and develop new therapeutic targets. Projects will be centered around the generation and phenotyping of new mouse models of late onset AD, based on identified risk variants from human studies. Endpoints include behavioral and cognitive testing, histopathology, biochemistry, RNA-seq, spatial gene expression and protein analyses, and alignment with human data. These models will be utilized to understand the biology that leads to the development of AD in the aged brain.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD with a minimum of 2 years of experience in the field of neuroscience. The candidate must have experience with animal models of Alzheimer's disease with extensive knowledge of animal surgery, behavioral, biochemical and imaging assays. Experience with beta-amyloid and tau interaction and synaptic loss within Alzheimer’s disease models is highly desirable, as well as the role of inflammation and glia in the context of AD models. The applicant must have the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and oral and written communication skills are essential. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
