Position description

Postdoctoral Fellow, Mental Health Services Research

Drs. Robert McCarron and Tim Bruckner seek a Postdoctoral Fellow in Medical Education within the UCI School of Public Health, at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), to conduct mental health services-related research. The fellowship is a two‐year appointment with the possibility of one-year renewal. This appointment is contingent upon receipt of the Ph.D. prior to the start date. The start date is negotiable but could begin as early as May 1, 2023.

Background: This appointment would be within the School of Public Health, with the work expectation being 75% time with Dr. Robert McCarron and 25% time with Dr. Tim Bruckner. The postdoctoral fellow would principally work on evaluating the innovative “Train New Trainer” (TNT) Program in which primary care practitioners receive training to screen and treat persons for a range of psychiatric conditions. This position will involve utilizing large-scale clinical and secondary datasets (e.g., Medi-Cal, UC Data Warehouse) from California to conduct quantitative mental health services and epidemiologic research. The postdoc will be involved in all aspects of the project, and will be expected to manage study datasets, conduct statistical analyses, and to prepare research manuscripts and presentations. In addition, the postdoc would contribute to the main aims of the project and develop her/his own research questions within the scope of the project. This position will include collaborations across and outside campus, as well as the potential for international travel. Involvement may also include grant writing and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students on the study team.

Duties:
• Evaluate the TNT program; prepare reports for State Legislature audiences and draft manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication, under the guidance of Drs. McCarron and Bruckner
• Retrieve, harmonize, and manage large clinical datasets; prepare analytic files for team members
• Participate in grant and proposal writing for TNT and other projects
• Conduct independent research in the area of mental health services using several large-scale datasets (e.g., UC Data Warehouse, SID/SEDD), under the guidance of Professor Tim Bruckner, Department of Health, Society & Behavior. Submit articles for publication.
• Participate in project meetings and other events with the team, as well as colloquia in Psychiatry and the Program in Public Health (which are supportive of TNT). You may also attend colloquia at the Center for Population, Inequality, and Policy, as relevant.
• Assist Drs. McCarron and Bruckner with IRB and Human Subjects reporting, as needed.
• Provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate research students who are working on these projects
• Office space will be provided by Medical Education, School of Medicine

Qualifications - the candidate will be expected to have:

• PhD in health policy, epidemiology, economics or a related field
• Background health policy, economics, or epidemiology/biostatistics
• Background in mental health
• Fluency in STATA or R; familiarity with SAS

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
