Position description

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in the School of Biological Sciences is accepting applications in the area protein biochemistry / structural biology related to Alzheimer’s disease. The person in the position will perform experiments with human brain samples and transgenic mice and amyloid fibrils and oligomers formed from synthetic and recombinant purified proteins under the direction of Dr. Charles Glabe. This NIH-funded project aims at developing methods for the purification and preparation of homogeneous amyloid oligomers and fibrils of different structural polymorphs and tools for studying amyloid polymorphism in vitro and in vivo. The hypothesis to be examined is that different types of amyloid accumulate in different phenotypic variants of disease. The researcher also will work on the seeded aggregation and replication of these amyloids isolated from human brain. Renewal of the appointment will be contingent on the availability of adequate funding and performance.

The University of California, Irvine is ranked among the nation’s best research institutes with over $90,000,000 in current funding. Enrichment opportunities abound through the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, the Memory Impairment and Neurodegenerative Disease Institute and the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. Irvine has a pleasant climate, five miles from the beach.

Candidate performs research, provides university and/or public service, demonstrates professional competency and activity of high quality and significance.

Requirements:
• Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell biology or biophysics with experience in protein biochemistry is required.
• Experience working with amyloids and insoluble proteins and proteomic analysis are preferred.

Qualified candidates should submit their curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and the names and contact information of three references.
