Position description
The UCI Edwards Lifesciences Foundation Cardiovascular Innovation and Research Center, (CIRC) an academic-based research and training center at the University of California, Irvine, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level with a target start date of July 1, 2024. The tenure home for this faculty position will be the Biomedical Engineering department within the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. We seek candidates who aspire to establish a strong and dynamic research program in cardiovascular engineering. Within cardiovascular engineering, we seek candidates with research expertise and interests including but not limited to: health disparities, imaging, medical devices, electrophysiology, immunoengineering and immunotherapy, tissue engineering, microphysiological systems, therapeutics and interventions, genetic/protein/metabolic engineering, synthetic/systems biology, functional biomaterials, mathematical/computational modeling, and biophysics. The candidate should be capable of and committed to teaching biomedical engineering courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Respect for all persons regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, and protected veteran status and commitment to inclusive excellence is expected. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related fields. Candidates with both an M.D. and a Ph.D. are encouraged to apply. Postdoctoral experience is desirable but not required.
The successful candidate will join a strong and growing research group in the CIRC, which is highly collegial and collaborative. Laboratory space will be available in the new and light-filled Susan and Henry Samueli Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building. Opportunities to collaborate outside the CIRC are also plentiful, especially with the vibrant and diverse cardiovascular medical device industry in Orange County, the UCI School of Medicine, and the clinical faculty at the UCI Medical Center. Research facilities at UCI relevant to this position include the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Center, the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Center - the first California Institute of Regenerative Medicine Center in the State of California - the Beckman Laser Institute, the UCI Beall Applied Innovation, the Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility (with cleanrooms), the Center for Advanced Design & Manufacturing of Integrated Microfluidics, the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics, the Center for Complex Biological Systems, and the NSF-Simons Center for Multiscale Cell Fate. Both the CIRC and BME have strong traditions of faculty mentoring; access to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity is provided by UCI. In addition, Irvine is one of the safest communities in the U.S. and offers a very pleasant year-round climate, numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, and one of the highest-ranked public-school systems in the nation.
Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae including a publication list, a concise statement of proposed research, and a teaching statement. Candidates are encouraged to delineate their unique contributions to each publication. A separate statement that addresses past and/or planned contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion must also be included in the application materials. Applicants should provide names and contact information for a minimum of three references who are willing to submit letters of recommendation on the applicant’s behalf. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, applications and supporting materials should be received by November 1, 2023.
