Position description
The University of California, Irvine Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar position (Level 0 to Level 3) in the laboratory of Tayloria N.G. Adams, Ph.D. The applicant will work at the interface of stem cell biology and bioengineering, carrying out essential research and administrative duties.
Stem cells are of interest in cell therapy research because they differentiate into multiple distinct cell types, have positive immunomodulatory effects, and secrete bioactive molecules. Due to stem cells’ unique properties, biomanufacturing to generate populations of cells that can be further studied or used as therapeutics has emerged as a vital area of research. A challenge to biomanufacturing stem cells is the heterogeneity of stem cell cultures, which contain stem cells, partially differentiated progenitor cells, and fully differentiated cells. An impediment to effectively harnessing stem cell therapeutic potential is the inability to detect or select specific cell subpopulations due to an insufficient number of biomarkers. The major goals of this postdoctoral scholar position are to sort progenitor populations of stem cells using electrode-based microfluidic platforms and study their biological differences with an emphasis on stem cell therapeutics.
The Samueli School of Engineering and Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center offers an exceptional interdisciplinary environment for biomedical research and professional development, with connections to the School of Medicine, School of Biological Sciences, and School of Physical Sciences. This postdoctoral scholar position will enable an early career scholar the opportunity to pursue timely and impactful research, innovate microfluidic technology, and build professional networks within different scientific communities. Research efforts include the integration of stem cell biology (i.e., differentiation, immunomodulatory signaling, gene regulation and expression), microfluidic cell sorting, and biomarker development in order to improve understanding and the manipulation of stem cell heterogeneity.
The position requires a doctorate in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a closely related field with expertise in cell separations. Areas of specific interest include microfluidic device fabrication, electrode-based cell sorting, label-free biomarkers, dielectrophoresis, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and epigenetics. The candidate should have hands-on learning experience including the ability to conduct literature reviews, design experiments, collect and analyze large data sets, and interpret results. Initial appointment will be for a 24-month period, renewable subject to performance and funding availability.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publications and contact information for three references. Apply by submitting your application to our online RECRUIT system at: https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/JPF08347.
