Position description

The University of California, Irvine is seeking an Assistant Project Scientist to join NSF-funded research-practice partnership projects on STEM learning at the high-school level, including climate change education and environmental engineering education. Initial appointment is for two years, with possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding. Anticipated start date can be September 15, 2023, or a date afterwards, depending on applicants’ situations.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include engaging in developing research-practice partnerships with partner high schools, county office of education, and community organizations. Research tasks include conducting design-based implementation research (DBIR), facilitating participatory science experiences with high-school students, teachers, and community members; collecting observational, survey, and interview data; analyzing data qualitatively and through mixed-methods approaches; presenting findings at research and practitioner conferences and at community events; co-authoring publications with research team and partners; writing funding proposals to seek external support; consulting with and mentoring teams of graduate and undergraduate students; coordinating projects’ activities, including scheduling and facilitating meetings, assigning tasks and supporting research assistants, managing communication among partners.

Salary: The salary range is $70,500 - $90,000 annually plus benefits.

Requirements: Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Education or a related field, post-PhD research experience, and expertise in research-practice partnerships, learning sciences, DBIR methodologies, qualitative and mixed methods research, participatory design, science education or STEM education research, equity-oriented approaches to partnership work. In addition, candidates must demonstrate commitment to equity-focused research; advanced expertise in academic writing and editing; successful experience in writing human subjects protocols; and expertise in leading research initiatives and teams. Successful grant writing is desirable but not required.
