Position description
The Research Justice Shop at UC Irvine’s Newkirk Center for Science & Society and UC Irvine School of Law’s Center for Land, Environment, and Natural Resources are hiring a postdoctoral scholar to co-develop and disseminate community-driven approaches to address climate change as part of the Wildland-Urban Interface Climate Action Network (WUICAN). The appointment is for two years at 100% time, with a comprehensive benefits package. Continuation beyond initial appointment will be based on performance and availability of funding. Salary is based on UCI salary scales and dependent on qualifications and experience.

With funding from the California Climate Action grant program, WUICAN builds a network of environmental justice organizations, academic partners, and Tribal nations to address the impacts of climate change on California’s landscapes and people while promoting community resilience to climate change. The postdoctoral scholar will work closely with a diverse team of community leaders, faculty, academic staff, graduate students, and other postdoctoral scholars to co-design and conduct research on practices and policies that promote community-driven climate action. The responsibilities of this position include:
-Co-design research questions related to the needs of communities impacted by climate change in California landscapes.
-Collect and analyze quantitative and/or qualitative data on communities impacted by climate changes such as drought, wildfire, heat waves, floods, and precipitation extremes.
-Convene and facilitate policy design workshops with community partners and other stakeholders; propose innovations to local and regional plans, model rules, and guidance to advance state climate policy, environmental review, and multi-jurisdictional coordination.
-Analyze the process by which communities gain agency over research, policies, and actions to mitigate the risks of climate change.
-Collaborate with environmental justice organizations, Indigenous communities, and academics from multiple disciplines, including environmental science, law, social science, and the humanities
-Disseminate research outcomes through peer-reviewed articles, reports, presentations, workshops, conferences, and other media.
-Mentor graduate and/or undergraduate student researchers.

Qualifications
Doctoral degree in social science, law, environmental policy, or a related discipline conferred by December 1, 2023
At least one peer-reviewed publication or comparable scholarly product accepted/published at time of application
Excellent research and writing skills
Desired qualifications
Demonstrated ability and experience working independently
Demonstrated ability and experience working as a member of cross-disciplinary team Professional experience, training, or strong interest in learning about team science
Experience with community-based research practice and methods
Experience or interest in climate science, climate policy, ecology, conservation, restoration, and/or resource management
Experience with consensus building, facilitation, and/or collaborative problem-solving
Well-developed skills in oral and written communication, organization, leadership, mentoring, cultural awareness, and project management
