The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Irvine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position beginning April 1, 2024.

The Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing (CHRS) in The Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine currently offers a postdoctoral scholar position in satellite precipitation estimation and applications using machine learning methods. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Developing innovative techniques for satellite precipitation estimation.
  2. Implementing bias correction methods for improving accuracy.
  3. Integrating satellite precipitation estimates with ground observations.
  4. Creating methodologies for analyzing precipitation variability across different time and spatial scales, with a specific emphasis on flood and drought analysis and applications.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in hydrometeorology, remote sensing, machine learning, hydrologic modeling, and statistics.

In addition to the qualifications, the position requires a PhD degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Earth Sciences or other related quantitative fields. The preferred candidate should have experience in process modeling as well as good written and oral communication skills and demonstrate a strong research publication record.

The candidate will be responsible for writing reports, research papers, and grant proposals. The prospective scholar will work with Associate Adjunct Professor Phu Nguyen and research colleagues at the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing (CHRS)

The initial appointment will be for a 24-month period, renewable subject to performance and availability of adequate funding. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience.
