The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks a dynamic, knowledgeable leader to join an enthusiastic staff in building a research library of excellence for a young and rapidly-growing university ranked nationally among the top. The Head of Special Collections & Archives and University Archivist will play a leadership role in an innovative, service-oriented, and collaborative environment to build special collections and archives of high quality and develop services which enhance the impact of those collections and archives on our students, faculty, scholars, and researchers.
Reporting to the Assistant University Librarian for Research Resources, the Head of Special Collections & Archives and University Archivist provides leadership and vision for the department and, in collaboration with other library units, oversees all activities including collecting, processing, organizing, preserving, and making accessible collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives, photographs, digital collections, and other rare and special materials. The Head is actively involved in donor cultivation and fundraising as well as grant writing and implementation. As University Archivist, the incumbent administers activities related to UCI’s historical records and documents. The Head provides expertise and creativity in the development of excellent special collections and archives in a variety of formats. Major collections include the Critical Theory Archive, the Southeast Asian Archive, and the University Archives, as well as in-depth collections on Orange County and California history, dance and performing arts, 20th-century political pamphlets, artists' books, rare books, and small press books. The Department is also responsible for the curation of unique UCI digital scholarship. Special Collections & Archives staff provide reference assistance and instruction in the use of resources, and work closely with other units in the Libraries to ensure effective access to their collections and archives. The Head has overall responsibility for personnel supervision, budgeting, and resources management within the department which currently consists of 5 librarian and 2 staff positions as well as a number of student assistants and interns.
The Head of Special Collections & Archives and University Archivist also actively participates in various groups within and beyond the UCI Libraries. As a member of Leadership Council, the UCI Libraries’ senior management team responsible for library-wide planning and policy making, the incumbent works with other library leaders to shape strategic directions for the Libraries. As the University Archivist, the incumbent fosters relationships with units and individuals across the campus to acquire the most significant materials for documenting the history and functions of the University of California, Irvine. The incumbent also represents the UCI Libraries within the University of California system, and at the regional and national level regarding issues related to special collections and archives. The incumbent is expected to work comfortably and with a high degree of expertise in a shared decision making environment.
• Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
• Five years of successful and increasingly responsible professional experience in special collections and/or archives.
• Ability to provide leadership and vision for special collections, archives, and digital scholarship.
• Strong commitment to public services and user-centered reference and instructional services with an understanding of the scholarly use of library collections and services within a special collections setting.
• Ability to successfully supervise, mentor, and train Special Collections and Archives personnel.
• Skill in developing and managing special collections resources in print, digital and other formats.
• Knowledge of current archival management practices, project planning methods, policies, procedures, and trends.
• Familiarity with current scholarship and research methods employed in the field of archives, rare books and manuscripts, as well as knowledge of the rare books, manuscripts, and antiquarian book trade.
• Ability to serve as University Archivist and administer activities related to collecting, organizing, preserving, and providing access to UCI's records and documents.
• Interest in supporting innovative approaches for access to unique special collections and digital scholarship.
• Ability to provide guidance in the development, implementation, and assessment of digital scholarship services that help curate scholarship throughout its entire lifecycle from point of creation to preservation.
• Ability to actively engage in fundraising, donor relations, collection solicitation, and gift management.
• Ability to prepare and manage grant proposals.
• Excellent organizational, planning, and project management skills.
• Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues.
• Record of professional achievements sufficient to meet the criteria for appointment at the Associate Librarian or Librarian rank and ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement in the Librarian series.
• Successful experience supervising librarians.
• Successful experience managing a budget.
• Experience implementing new technologies in a special collections environment.
• Knowledge of intellectual property issues related to archives, libraries, and special collections and copyright issues associated with print and digital technologies.
• Sound knowledge of library preservation and conservation issues and practices.
• Ability to provide innovative and quality service and work effectively with faculty, students, fellows, visiting scholars, and readers.
• Reading knowledge of at least one language other than English.
The Department of Special Collections and Archives
The Special Collections and Archives Department is responsible for building, maintaining, and making accessible the UCI Libraries' collections of manuscripts and archives, rare books, and notable subject collections. Archival collecting areas of particular strength and distinction include regional history (emphasizing Orange County and Southern California), the Southeast Asian Archive, the Critical Theory Archive (including the papers of Jacques Derrida, Wolfgang Iser, Paul de Man, and others), the University Archives (documenting the UC Irvine campus), dance and the performing arts (including the papers of Robert Cohen and choreographers Donald McKayle and Eugene Loring), and distinguished UCI faculty (including Nobel Laureates Frederick Reines and Sherwood Rowland).
The UCI Libraries

The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Ayala Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. These buildings contain over 3,300 public seats for study and research and provide more than 600 public access computers. Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California pay scales. Appointment is anticipated to be at the Associate Librarian or Librarian rank with a salary of $50,448-$100,212 plus an annual administrative stipend.
Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
