Position description

Position Description: The Department of Art at UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts seeks a lecturer in Photography. The Department of Art offers both the Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) and the Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA). The starting date for the position is July 1, 2015, with teaching responsibilities commencing in September 2015.

The Department of Art is looking for an experienced lecturer to teach a range of courses in photography. The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of contemporary art with an active engagement with formal and theoretical experimentation, a thoughtful appreciation of historical precedent, and a conceptual ability to intersect with other art forms and new technologies. Candidates must possess sufficient versatility to teach studio and lecture courses, critiques, and seminars, while also serving as a student mentor and advisor. We are looking for a candidate with extensive teaching experience at all undergraduate levels including large lecture classes and photography courses from basic to advanced studio. Interdisciplinary teaching experience at the graduate level will be considered an added benefit. Candidates must have an extensive knowledge of and proficiency in both analog and digital production. Additionally, as a department with growing pedagogical and resource oversight needs, we also seek an individual with demonstrated experience and vision in facilities management, future expansion, and resource planning. Supplementary skill sets and knowledge bases in other media (e.g. sculpture, video, imaging technologies, etc.) and how these can pedagogically interface with camera arts will also be a consideration.

The Lecturer with Security of Employment series requires, in addition to excellent teaching and service, that the candidate makes outstanding and recognized contributions to the development of his or her specific discipline and/or of pedagogy.

The successful candidate will join a growing department of 20 full-time faculty and 3 lecturers. A heterogeneous group of artists and scholars, the department values inquiry and experimentation over specific ideologies and intellectual methods. The department’s research and instruction examines how definitions of art play themselves out in contexts ranging from the personal to the public, from the gallery to the street. The department’s curriculum emphasizes that visual art is not a freestanding category, but instead takes shape through its intersection with other creative practices and knowledge domains.

Qualifications: MFA or equivalent training; a minimum of eight years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level; experience in facilities management and resource planning; a record of significant research achievements; and a strong commitment to camera arts and interdisciplinarity. Qualifications of applicants will be reviewed with emphasis on the following criteria in descending order of emphasis: excellence in teaching, professional achievement and activity, and academic and public service.

Application Requirements:
1) A cover letter explaining interest in the position and teaching philosophy;
2) CV, including record of publications, projects, and weblinks, if any;
3) Names and contact information for three recommenders only (no actual letters); and
4) A statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion.
