Position description

The Department of Dance, Claire Trevor School of the Arts at the University of California, Irvine, invites applications for a part-time lecturer in West African Dance.

The successful candidate will teach an introductory level West African Dance course to dance majors and non-majors. Specific to a region’s dance and cultural contexts the candidate is expected to have knowledge of songs and drumming patterns and these should be integrated into the course. The class will meet multiple times per week beginning Fall 2015. Appointments may be made at varying percentages of time.

Minimum qualifications: M.F.A./M.A, or significant professional experience in the field. Minimum of three years of teaching experience in West African Dance required.

Salary begins at the full time rate of $49,012. Appointments will be made at varying percentages of time.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Department of Dance at the University of California, Irvine enrolls 150 undergraduate dance majors and 20 graduate students in B.A., B.F.A., and M.F.A. degrees in Dance. The department, with 14 full-time and several part-time faculty, has been recognized as one of the nation’s outstanding dance programs. UCI alumni have danced with professional dance companies, in film and television, on Broadway, in national tours, and are employed as university dance faculty nationwide and internationally. The department’s facilities include six dance studios, a motion capture studio, and a Dancer Wellness/ Pilates Suite. Students perform in three theatres (including an Experimental Media Performance Lab) and participate in collaborative telematic projects.
