Position description

The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for the position of Associate/Full Professor. We seek a scholar whose research addresses current processes of world-making and world-ordering, yet is firmly rooted in the discipline’s theoretical and ethnographic archive. The successful candidate will speak across disciplinary boundaries to stake out a place for anthropological methods and perspectives in emerging configurations of knowledge in the academy and other organizational sites where anthropology can contribute to the conversation. The Department seeks candidates setting agendas that will inform the future of the field as it engages with both changing conditions of the world and established modes of scholarly inquiry. The ideal candidate will combine rigorous ethnographic research that reflects on and, crucially, engages with the “grand challenges” of our time, examples of which include (but are not limited to) climate change, aging, the consequences of ever-expanding computational power, enduring inequalities and regimes of race, gender, and class, the limits to economic growth, and distributed agency in specialized networks and new communicative spheres, Such challenges also include a core anthropological concern with transformations of what it is to be human as a consequence of technology.

Candidates must have a PhD in Anthropology or related field. We have a preference for candidates who publish in established formats and venues—evidenced by a strong publication program—but who are also interested in alternative forms of scholarly communication, enabled by technology, the arts and/or design. Applicants should also demonstrate a commitment to innovative and effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, relevant to career-making both inside and outside academia, and strong potential for service in the department, on campus, and to the profession. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. We also encourage scholars working in Latin America to apply, but geographical region is open.

Please send a cover letter detailing research and teaching expertise, a CV, writing sample or publication, and the names of three references. Candidates should apply online. Please visit the following website to begin the application process: https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/JPF02918 Screening of applications will begin November 1, 2015; the final deadline for applications is December 15, 2015. Candidates whose applications are received by November 1, 2015 may be contacted for prearranged interviews at the AAA meetings in Denver, CO, November 18-22, 2015.
