Position description

The University of California, Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Department of Dance invites applications for a part-time lecturer in dance practice, specialist in dance forms under the hip hop umbrella. The department welcomes applicants who are hip hop artists working both inside and outside the breaking vocabulary, especially those familiar with regional influences on global styles such as popping, locking, waacking, house and funk. The candidate may also have interests in practices such as community-based art, site-specific, multi-genre, and interdisciplinary work that go beyond the theater stage.
The successful candidate will be familiar with the histories of African American diaspora dance forms, have university teaching experience, and a B.A., B.F.A., M.F.A./M.A., or commensurate professional experience in the field.

This candidate will teach one studio course for dance majors and others, with a view to the intersection between hip hop forms and contemporary performance.
Full time annual rate begins at $49,012. Actual appointment will be at 10% percent time per course or $1,633.73 per quarter for one or more quarters.
The course will be offered for one quarter (11 weeks), in Fall 2016, with possible extension into further quarters.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Department of Dance at the University of California, Irvine enrolls 150 undergraduate dance majors and 20 graduate students in B.A., B.F.A., and M.F.A. degrees in Dance. The department, with 15 full-time and several part-time faculty, has been recognized as one of the nation’s outstanding dance programs. UCI alumni have danced with professional dance companies, in film and television, on Broadway, in national tours, and are employed as university dance faculty nationwide and internationally. The department’s facilities include six dance studios, a motion capture studio, and a Dancer Wellness/ Pilates Suite. Students perform in three theatres (including an Experimental Media Performance Lab) and participate in collaborative telematic projects.
