Position description

An Associate Project Scientist position, contingent upon funding, is available in the laboratory of Prof. George Sperling in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.

Area of research: Visual attention and visual motion processing. It is important for the candidate to have experience in research in these areas as demonstrated, for example, by relevant first-authored publications in major journals.

Description of duties: The research involves programming experiments, recruiting subjects, working with and supervising undergraduate and graduate students to run the experiments, writing data analysis programs and analyzing data, formal mathematical and computational modeling, writing reports, making presentations at scientific meetings, typically VSS, and assisting in the preparation of grant proposals.

Salary and benefits: This position is full-time and includes benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Qualifications: The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science with expertise in both experimental and computational cognitive science. Because of the extensive amount of work in computation, formal modeling, and statistics, it would be desirable for the candidate to have a second degree, e.g., a Master’s degree in computer science or a similar field. The candidate must have experience in Matlab and Psychtoolbox, the software in use in the laboratory. Familiarity with Mac computers and Unix operating system also is required, as is experience in linear systems (e.g., Fourier analysis), Bayesian statistics, and nested model testing. A working knowledge of C/C++ and familiarity with Windows systems is desirable.
