Position description

The University of California, Irvine (UCI), Department of Family Medicine invites applications for the position of Co-Director of the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC) Residency Track.

In July, 2010, the Department of Family Medicine began a special PRIME-LC track within the residency program to train culturally fluent family physicians who will become leaders in addressing healthcare disparities within underserved Latino and other minority communities in California. Continuing the original vision of the nationally recognized PRIME-LC medical school program and through a variety of innovative curricular experiences integrated throughout the three years of residency, the PRIME-LC residency graduates will have a unique and specific set of knowledge and skills that will make them highly desirable candidates for positions of leadership at community health centers, for academic faculty positions, and for careers involving work in medically underserved communities.

The Department of Family Medicine seeks a visionary leader with skills to continue to develop and oversee this dynamic educational track within the Family Medicine Residency Program. The candidate must have a strong desire to lead and mentor a diverse group of residents and other learners. The individual must also have an understanding of the complex issues affecting medically underserved populations. The successful applicant should be experienced in curriculum design and evaluation, have a strong record of collaboration, and an understanding of the culture of medical education, residency training, and career development. The candidate should have a strong understanding of the process of scientific research in order to lead scholarly activities for the residents in the PRIME-LC track. The candidate should be able to develop and implement a compelling vision that inspires supporters and improves strategic partnerships within the community.

Eligibility
• Terminal graduate or professional degree (PhD, MD, Dr.PH, MPH) in relevant field (Medicine, Biological Sciences, Public Health, etc.).
• Demonstrated experience in program design, development, management/leadership, and evaluation.
• Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse group of residents and other learners.
• Demonstrated ability to develop collaborations with partners in academia, healthcare providers, and the community.
• Experience in conducting scientific research and/or grant activity desired.
• Fluency in Spanish desired.

Responsibilities
• Develop and implement the curriculum.
• Develop and schedule orientation and visits to community-based organizations that provide services to the community.
• Develop opportunities for residents to mentor undergraduate and medical students.
• Direct and guide residents in community-based projects and/or research.
• Provide lectures on topics of health disparity and social determinants of health.
• Identify appropriate funding opportunities, compile proposals, complete IRB applications, develop the scope of work for consultants and sub-awardees on proposals, and work with the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to create proposal budgets.
• Work with the CAO to respond to the review items by the School of Medicine and the Office of Research Administration.
• Serve as liaison to PRIME-LC, UCI School of Medicine (SOM).
• Recruit highly qualified residency applicants to PRIME-LC track.
• Recruit highly qualified medical students to PRIME- LC, UCI SOM.
• Promote the principles of PRIME-LC among residents and foster excellence in the clinical and community settings through direct teaching and performance evaluations.
• Serve as a role model for the PRIME-LC community in the areas of clinical care, leadership and advocacy.
• Provide opportunities for leadership training and leadership roles during residency.
