Position description

The Lasers, Flames and Aerosols Group (LFA) associated with Professor Derek Dunn-Rankin at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a half-time Research Specialist for femtosecond holography experiments, theory, and modeling. The successful candidate will work with colleagues at local instrumentation companies and at UCI to study the fundamentals and applications of holography using femtosecond laser sources.

Specific responsibilities will include:
• Experiments: construction, maintanence, and execution of inline and off-axis holography using femtosecond lasers. The experiments include the use of optical targets for calibration and may include the use of Kerr media to create ultrashort gating of light.
• Theory and Modeling: development, implementation, testing, validation, and documentation of concepts and calculations that predict holographic interferograms, including all optical elements, like lenses, pinholes, and detectors. The code will be based on tools written in Matlab, so experience with this language is valuable.

Additional responsibilities will include reporting on potential applications, evaluating the literature to maintain cutting edge understanding, and collaborating ability with colleagues in industry. The work will also entail collaboration with other researchers, preparing publications and delivering presentations for top journals and conferences, reporting to the funding agencies, and periodic assistance to graduate students.

The successful candidate will have a degree in mechanical engineering (Ph.D. strongly preferred) and demonstrated experience in the topic areas outlined above. The candidate should have excellent communication and time management skills, ability to learn quickly and enthusiastically, and experience in numerical simulation, particularly with the codes developed at LBNL. The position is dependent on extramural funding and research contracts of the Principal Investigator. An immediate start date is available within 2 weeks of the hiring decision. Renewal of the appointment will be offered to well performing candidates contingent upon the availability of adequate funding.
