Nutrient trading is a market-based program that involves the exchange of nutrient pollution allocations between sources. Trades can be point to point, point to nonpoint, or nonpoint to nonpoint sources. This project will characterize the role of various modeling uncertainties along with climate variability and change in quantification of nutrient loads from different sectors. Specifically, this project will develop a risk-based approach for computing nonpoint source (NPS) to point source (PS) trading ratios. This project will focus on the South Platte River Basin (SPRB) and use state-of-the-art datasets, methods, and models that have been collected and/or developed as part of the CLEAN project.

This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Earth System Science, or a closely related field, and expertise in data processing, numerical simulation, model-data synthesis, and computer programing. The candidate should demonstrate strong quantitative skills, a solid background in surface water chemistry, as well as good written and oral communication skills. Prior experience in these listed fields would be an advantage. The candidate will be responsible for writing reports, research papers, and grant proposals, and oral presentations.

Initial appointment will be for a 12-month period, renewable subject to performance and availability of adequate funding. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The prospective scholar will work with Professor Jasper Vrugt (http://faculty.sites.uci.edu/jasper).
