The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks a creative, knowledgeable, collaborative, and user-oriented Research Librarian for Social Sciences (RLSS) to develop collection strategies and deliver innovative liaison, reference, and instruction services in the social sciences. The RLSS will serve as the subject librarian to several departments in the social sciences such as Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, Cognitive Sciences, and Psychology & Social Behavior depending on the needs of the library and the expertise of the successful candidate. The RLSS will actively engage with faculty, students, and staff in assigned departments in order to develop strong working relationships. This position will require someone with a sound understanding of social science research methods, data applications, legal and government information.

Duties and Responsibilities
The RLSS will be a member of the Collection Strategies Department, reporting to the Head of Collection Strategies. The RLSS will be responsible for the selection, assessment, and management of collections and resources for various disciplines within the social sciences. The RLSS will serve as liaison to the faculty and students in assigned social science departments to ensure that their information needs are being met and to promote the Libraries’ services and resources. The incumbent will keep abreast of new publishing releases in the social sciences and will develop and update research guides in support of social science research. As a member of the Collection Strategies Department, the incumbent will take a lead role in various library-wide collection projects and initiatives.
The RLSS will provide specialized reference and research consultations in the social sciences. The incumbent will also maintain sufficient knowledge to provide effective general reference assistance in a variety of modes including in-person and digital reference. The incumbent will provide subject-based instruction and will also participate in the Libraries’ instruction program for students enrolled in lower-division writing courses and other information literacy initiatives.
• Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and library experience.
• Strong understanding of the key issues in social science collection management.
• Knowledge of social science research methodologies, data applications and repositories, and legal and government information sources.
• Ability to provide effective specialized reference and instruction in social science subjects.

Collection Strategies Department
The Collection Strategies Department is responsible for the library-wide development and management of general collections in the Langson Library, Ayala Science Library, and Grunigen Medical Library under the administration and coordination of the Associate University Librarian for Research Resources. This department takes the lead role in developing and planning the overarching and ongoing collections policies, procedures, and projects that ensure that the scholarly resources available meet the campus teaching, research, and patient care needs. The Department consists of 5 librarians (including the department head) and 1 library assistant.

Salary & Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California pay scales. Appointment is anticipated to be at the Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian rank with a salary of $49,165 - $75,453.
Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave. The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
