The Department of Mathematics anticipates openings for Academic Coordinators for the Math CEO program.
UC Irvine Math CEO (Community Educational Outreach) is an inclusive program designed to spread the joy of mathematics among middle school students who may not typically be exposed to academic enrichment opportunities. Founded in 2014 by two faculty members in the Department of Mathematics at UC Irvine, Dr. Alessandra Pantano and Dr. Li-Sheng Tseng, Math CEO serves approximately 150 students annually from two middle schools from Santa Ana, California: Lathrop Intermediate and Villa Fundamental. The majority of participants are Hispanic/Latino. Through Math CEO, the students get access to enriching math curriculum that is not part of their daily school work. The curriculum contains activities that reveal the excitement of mathematics and its applications. By working with college mentors in a university setting, the middle school students also gain a multidimensional perspective of university life.
Math CEO inspires and supports interest in mathematics, with the overarching goal of imparting the mathematical foundations and critical thinking skills required to successfully pursue a college education and career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas. The program also seeks to instill the desire for a college education by sharing college access information and financial aid opportunities with participating students and their families.
The Math CEO Coordinator helps with planning, executing and evaluating outreach events on and off campus. In collaboration with the Math CEO directors, the Coordinator works with and supervises many people including Outreach Assistants (undergraduate work study students) and volunteers (mostly undergraduate students who work directly with middle school participants). The Math CEO Coordinator is the liaison between the UCI Math CEO team (students, faculty and staff) and the public (including teachers and school administrators), and ensures communication between all involved. The Coordinator might also help to recruit and train volunteers, oversee finances, and assist with writing grant proposals. The primary role of the Math CEO Coordinator encompasses planning math circle meetings on campus, as well as major school events such as the annual parents’ workshop. The weekly, on-campus math circles include room setup (rearranging tables and chairs, and distributing copies of materials, manipulatives and snacks).
Under the direction of Program Director, recruit and organize undergraduate and graduate students to assist with mentoring support
• Monitor and support undergraduate work studies employees
• Provide consistent, ongoing communication with Math CEO Leadership Team
• Maintain relationships with school teachers in order to facilitate program
• Develop and maintain culture of collaboration
• Coordinates activities of program with inter-related activities of other programs, departments or staff to ensure optimum efficiency and compliance with appropriate policies, procedures and specifications
• Prepares periodic reports on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies
• Develops, compiles and writes communications and promotional literature for distribution such as newsletters, brochures or flyers; coordinates process from development through and printing and distribution
• Develops and facilitates workshops, meetings or conferences; coordinates logistics, scheduling and participant communications
• Interacts and maintains liaison with students, faculty, staff and outside/community agencies in facilitating program objectives
• Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND two years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinator program experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Three (3) years related experience; 1 of which includes working with undergraduate students or K12 students/teachers, also;
• Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development and teacher preparation processes
• Demonstrated knowledge of processes for dissemination of results through presentations, reports and publications
• Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
• Evidence of effective verbal and written communication
Interest and ability in developing K-12 math curriculum preferred.
