Position description

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Irvine anticipates openings in the Project Scientist Series, to study the ability to detect damage of parts manufactured using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and related techniques using Laser Doppler Vibrometry augmented with finite element analysis. Although acoustic resonant spectroscopy has seen limited application, the information rich signals in the vibrational spectra of objects provide a pathway to many new applications. Components with the same shape but made of different materials, different fatigue histories, damage, tampering, or heat treatment, will respond differently to high frequency ultrasonic stimulation. We are researching promising new ways to use these techniques in manufacturing technology to detect hidden manage and by providing signatures such as digital codes that are unique to specific objects and even to specific locations on objects.

Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in Laser Doppler Vibrometry and numerical methods (FEA) applied to additively manufactured metal products. Additional experience in the utilizing high power lasers and metal powders to additively create metal parts is highly desired. Experience with coding languages for the creation of a GUI, database creation and the use of non-p-value statistical methods is also a plus.
