The Teaching Associate will support the teaching and research activities of the Medical Gross Anatomy & Embryology course offered at UCI School of Medicine. The primary duties will be to assist in the lecture and laboratory teaching of first year medical students. Additional teaching will be done with fourth year medical students in the Surgical Anatomy elective along with the Summer Anatomy Academy. This position also addresses the critical need throughout the country for individuals with training in clinical anatomy. Research activities will center on medical education and different forms of pedagogy that can be instituted to further enhance medical education.
Dr. Jamie Wikenheiser is the lead faculty member for this position. He serves as the Course Director for both Medical Gross Anatomy & Embryology and the Surgical Anatomy elective. He also serves as the Program Director for the UCI Summer Anatomy Academy through the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology.

The Teaching Associate will work with a diverse population of medical students. This position is similar to a post-doctoral position where an individual is gaining additional experience before landing a full faculty position. Their continued training will focus on filling a national need for individuals with a clinical anatomy background.
The Teaching Associate will supplement their previous research experience with research focused on teaching pedagogy at the medical school level. With the continued cutbacks in the total number of contact hours specifically of the medical gross anatomy courses throughout the country, innovative techniques of teaching are needed to help streamline the training of medical students. Pilot studies have included the addition of iPads in the dissection laboratories pre-loaded with an online dissector to facilitate dissection. Currently, specific procedure laboratories and interactive radiology using Anatomage products have been added to the curriculum to supplement the dissection experience.
