Assistant Specialist Step I-III

Job Description: The Esports Research Lab in the Department of Informatics, University of California, Irvine, is hiring a Assistant Specialist to help design and conduct empirical research on esports (competitive videogame play) – in particular, the evaluation of a local high school esports league and its concomitant clubs, workshops, and high school curriculum. As part of this work, we will investigate the academic, social, and emotional effects of participation in the league and related activities. Strong candidates will have experience in empirical research design, implementation, analysis, and publication using mixed methods including quasi-experimental work, behavioral and cognitive measures, big data, natural language processing analyses, and/or machine learning. Knowledge and experience in esports, games, cognition and learning are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants who lack experience in any of these areas but are willing to learn will also be considered.
The Assistant Specialist will be responsible for the all phases of investigation, project management, coordinating related meetings, and playing a primary role in writing manuscripts and proposals. He or she will also work closely with the Principal Investigator and will directly oversee the work of a team of graduate and undergraduate students in the Esports Research Lab. He or she will serve a leadership role, ensuring that the scope and direction of each aspect of the project remains on schedule and in line with our lab’s mission to understand and enhance esports. This research is part of a large multi-lab collaborative research agenda, providing an excellent opportunity for collaborative research.
• Experience in research design, data analysis, and writing
• Strong analytic & writing skills
• Knowledge of esports or knowledge of videogames broadly coupled with an active willingness to learn about esports
• An advanced degree in Social Sciences, Education, Games, Informatics, or a related discipline.
• Ability to lead a team effectively
This position is fulltime, including benefits, and begins July 15 , 2018. Salary is commensurate with experience. Position is for twelve (12) months, with the possibility of continuing for an additional 1-2 years, dependent on funding.
