Position description

We are looking for a Postdoctoral research associate interested in ice sheet modeling, as part of the UK/US International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration.
The project PROPHET (PROcesses, drivers, Prediction: modeling the History and Evolution of Thwaites) aims at improving model projections of Thwaites Glacier to reduce the uncertainty in the projection of the glacier’s behavior and subsequent contribution to sea-level rise in the future. This work will consists of using three independent ice sheet models (ISSM, Úa and STREAMICE) to investigate basal conditions, assess potential drivers of change, and perform ice/ocean coupled projections over the next centuries.
The term of appointment is for one year, and renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory progress and available funding. Start dates are flexible but we would like to start by the end of the year. A strong background in glaciology and/or climate system modelling is required, with expertise in finite element analysis and geophysical dynamics. Well-qualified candidates will have familiarity with MATLAB and C++, experience Linux/Unix systems, including the writing of shell scripts is preferred. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to work closely with Prof Mathieu Morlighem within the Department of Earth System Science and will use the Ice Sheet System Model (http://issm.jpl.nasa.gov) developed jointly with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The Earth System Science Department of UCI is a highly interdisciplinary environment with faculty expertise in many components of the Earth System, including atmospheric physics, land surface processes, climate dynamics, terrestrial and marine biogeochemical cycles, ice sheets, and human systems.
