Position description

Job Description:
The University of California, Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has an opportunity for an Associate Specialist in the lab of Dr. Mathew Blurton-Jones. The mission of UCI MIND is to engage in cutting edge, interdisciplinary research designed to discover the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and brain aging, characterize the transition from normal aging to Alzheimer’s disease, and develop new treatments to slow or eliminate cognitive impairment resulting from any etiology. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out independent research under the supervision of the PI. Primary duties will include the use of CRISPR gene editing technology to modify human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), the characterization and validation of resulting clones, and the differentiation of CRISPR-modified iPSCs into neuronal and glial lineages for experimentation.

Requirements:
Successful candidates must have at least a Master’s Degree in Stem Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or a related life science area. We are especially interested in applicants with proficiency in the following areas:

1 Design and use of CRISPR gene editing strategies to successfully delete, repair or insert genes into human iPSCs.
2 Maintenance, transfection, and differentiation of feeder free human induced pluripotent stem cells (feeding, passaging, freezing, transfections).
3 Differentiation of iPSCs toward neural and glial lineages.
4 Familiarity with basic molecular and biochemical techniques (qPCR, Western blotting).
5 Prior experience with Alzheimer’s Disease research is a plus.

Candidates must be able to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and to manage projects within a complex organization; therefore, excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills are essential. Evidence of prior successful CRISPR gene editing would be a plus. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.

Application Procedure:
Please submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae which should include a record of research experience and the names of three references before 10/18/2018 to:
