Postdoctoral Scholar in Co-Design and STEM Learning

The School of Education at the University of California, Irvine, invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to support research on the co-design of playful learning environments in urban, city spaces. The postdoctoral scholar will assist in facilitating co-design sessions with local neighborhood partners (with primarily Latinx populations) to develop playful learning installations in everyday spaces (e.g. parks, bus stops, grocery stores, basketball courts etc.). In addition to building community partnerships and co-designing with families, the postdoctoral scholar will support research in designing, developing, and studying how families take up informal STEM learning in these environments.

The postdoctoral scholar will work directly with Dr. Andres Bustamante and Dr. June Ahn (Co-PIs) at UCI and remotely with Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek (Co-PI, Temple University).

Position Responsibilities will include: managing relations and communications with our community partners, supervising and mentoring a team of graduate student researchers; co-designing and implementing informal STEM learning installations, submitting and updating human subjects protocols, collecting and analyzing data, writing reports, articles, presentations and other public communications of the work; and preparing grant proposals.

Requirements: Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in Education, Human-centered Design, or a related field in hand by the start date; experience in design methodologies; diverse methodological expertise is welcome (from participatory, qualitative, and quantitative approaches). Interest or background in working with diverse and underserved communities, and familiarity with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in education are welcomed. Spanish-speaking ability is highly sought as we will work directly in co-design partnerships in Latinx communities.

Initial appointment will be for a 12-month period and will be renewable subject to performance and availability of funding. Position will begin approximately September 15, 2020. This is a 1-year position (with possibility of renewal).
