Position description

The University of California, Irvine, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is inviting applications for a full-time position at the Associate Professor level. The academic appointment will be in the Adjunct series. The successful candidate will join the research group of Dr. Albert La Spada, Distinguished Professor and Director, UCI Institute for Neurotherapeutics.
The applicant should have a PhD degree and possess expertise in the study of motor neuron disease, with an emphasis on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), ideally with a focus on dominantly inherited familial ALS caused by mutations in genes that encode RNA binding proteins/helicases. Candidates should have a strong academic background and a promising research program, The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate the growth and development of an ALS motor neuron disease research program that will be positioned to successfully compete for extramural funding and/or engage in academic-industry partherships in translational drug discovery.

The chosen candidate will have demonstrated commitment to the cross-disciplinary training of the next generation of biomedical research scientists and will participate in the teaching and mentoring activities of the Department, which includes Medical Students, Residents, Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Graduate Students, Fellows, and Junior Faculty.

Candidates should have effective communication, organizational skills, ability to work well in a team environment, possess the ability to engage and mentor students and new faculty, and a strong commitment to institutional goals in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
