Position description

The University of California, Irvine, Samueli School of Engineering is seeking applicants for tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), as part of the UCI Black Thriving Initiative (BTI). Through this initiative, UCI aspires to become the nation’s foremost destination for Black people to thrive as undergraduates and graduate students, faculty and staff employees, and alumni and communities served by the campus in California, the United States and around the world. (For more information about the UCI BTI, visit https://inclusion.uci.edu/uci-black-thriving-initiative/).

This position is part of a UCI-wide Environmental Health Disparities faculty cluster hire. The goal of this program is to foster multidisciplinary collaborations to understand and address how environmental stress and racism contribute to health disparities in Black communities. The cluster includes the Program in Public Health, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the School of Social Sciences, and the School of Medicine. The Black Thriving Initiative provides an opportunity to start an impactful Center for Environmental Health Disparities Research. The ultimate goal of this cluster is to build on existing UCI strengths and advance inclusive excellence at UCI by recruiting a diverse faculty focused on tackling environmental health disparities as a form of anti-blackness that shapes Black communities' daily experiences.

The successful candidate’s research and educational focus should address water quality and water resource allocation issues, or air quality issues, that threaten the health of Black communities, and actively engage these communities in scholarly activities. Successful candidates are expected to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program, maintain a strong publication record, advise students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute their leadership and innovative thinking toward excellent programs and projects within the department and the university. This position requires, at the time of appointment, a PhD (or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering or related field. Preference will be given to candidates with an undergraduate degree in engineering.

Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. CEE highly values diversity, and strongly supports UCI’s core values of equity and inclusiveness. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Qualified applicants must have demonstrated their ability to work collegially with a diverse group of colleagues and to teach and mentor a diverse student body. UCI offers an exceptional environment for a successful career in environmental engineering with tremendous strength in water and air quality research, and is recipient of the STEMM Equity Achievement (SEA Change) Institutional Bronze Award, is a federally recognized Asian American Native American Pacific Island Serving Institution (AANAPISI) and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). UCI is consistently ranked in the top 10 public universities by Forbes (#1), Money (#6), and U.S. News & World Report (#9). In addition, the 2019 Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education ranked UCI 1st for offering an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

Compensation is competitive with the nation's top research universities. New hires enjoy priority access (with an advantageous mortgage program) to on-campus for-sale faculty housing within walking distance of the campus. A spousal hiring program is also available. UCI is located four miles from the Pacific Ocean and 45 miles south of cosmopolitan Los Angeles. The area offers a pleasant year-round climate, numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, and one of the highest-ranked public school systems in the nation.

With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidate finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks, to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full), will be subject to institutional reference checks.
