UCI Division of Continuing Education is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Irvine. The English Language and TEFL unit in Continuing Education (the self-supporting continuing education arm of the University of California, Irvine) provides English Language instruction (ESL), Teacher Training, and Custom Design programs to international students and the local community. The unit also works in conjunction with other units in DCE to provide the entire student experience while these students are in the United States including activities, advising, counseling, and many other issues that arise during the student(s) participation in one of the programs offered. The complexity of servicing international students extends far beyond the classroom and requires that management of this unit have expertise in not only developing and delivering ESL programs, but in leading a complex organization that provides a complete, satisfying, safe, and comprehensive experience to internationals at all levels from high school age to professional adults.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

I Teaching
Academic Appointees teach an average of 20 hours per week, four quarters per year, as scheduled. Classes typically take place during the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm. Classes in any of the ESL and TEFL programs offered by the unit may be assigned to teachers. Teachers are expected to spend adequate time preparing and grading all classes assigned to provide students the most effective and satisfying educational experience possible. Teachers may need to develop curriculum and course materials for classes they are assigned.

II Administrative
Academic Appointees are expected to engage in 1-2 hours per week (average) of administrative duties. This may include but is not limited to curriculum coordination and development, textbook and course material review, acting as mentors to teacher-trainees, assisting with hiring part-time instructors, etc.
Academic Appointees are expected to support part-time teachers, acting as new(er) teacher mentors. They are the main contacts for part-time teachers related to academic and curricular issues. They help ensure the curriculum is being taught consistently across classes and sections. They also keep up the Google Drive that contains course-related teaching materials and help part-time teachers access applicable materials.
Academic Appointees are expected to be available to answer student questions during office hours, which may be in person or virtual.
Academic Appointees are looked to as representatives of the ESL unit and DCE to part-time teachers, staff and external stakeholders. They are key members of the ESL/TEFL administrative team and are looked to for continually improving the unit.

III Other
Academic Appointees are expected to maintain in Outlook their scheduled classes, office hours, and other times they are unavailable between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm. Academic Appointees may schedule and note on their calendars “working elsewhere” in order to prepare classes and grade papers when they are not required to be in the office to support part-time teachers, administrators, or teach class. Academic Appointees are expected to be available to be called on by administration to assist with projects as needed, complete/submit all trainings/paperwork, etc. as required, and attend orientations, graduations, meetings, etc. Academic Appointees are leaders among the teaching staff, content experts in ESL and language teaching, and act as liaisons to other units within DCE.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirements include: l) M.A. in TESOL or related field, in hand; 2) at least three years ESL teaching experience, primarily in the United States: intensive English program or equivalent; 3) demonstrated ability to teach a variety of ESL courses, levels, and skills; 4) ability to teach daily, Monday-Friday, in-person classes; 5) English proficiency suitable to the position; and 6) eligibility to work full-time in the United States.

In addition to the above qualifications, the preferred candidate also has proficiency in a second language; teaching and/or living experience abroad; demonstrated skill in effectively training novice ESL/EFL teachers; practice utilizing technology to support the face-to-face classroom; active involvement in professional organizations (such as TESOL, CATESOL); and evident ability to engage and inspire a variety of international learners of English.

RESPONSIBILITIES (include, but are not limited to, the following):

  • Teach approx. 20 hours per week for each 10-Week term, 4 quarters per year, as scheduled, during the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm and participate in an additional preparation week each quarter
  • Assume responsibility for administrative tasks and committee work
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to other instructors
  • Advise and counsel international students
  • Develop course materials
  • Participate in the various extra-curricular functions that support the unit’s programs
