Position description

The School of Education at the University of California, Irvine is continuing an ambitious initiative to recruit faculty in research areas that are critical to the needs of the university and nation. We are an interdisciplinary school with faculty in education, psychology, cognitive science, sociology, economics, anthropology and related disciplines who are working together to address significant societal challenges related to education. We undertake this search in light of the shifting demographics in the United States, persistent and significant disparities across multiple indicators of student achievement and well-being, and our institutional commitment to educational equity and social mobility.

We seek an associate or full professor whose empirical work asks fundamental questions about diverse learners and the complex social systems in which they are embedded. We have a particular interest in scholars who focus on diverse learners (defined by, for example, race/ethnicity, gender, and/or socioeconomic status) who have been traditionally underserved in existing education systems. We define social contexts broadly to include (but are not limited to) institutions or organizations (e.g., schools, out-of-school learning activities and environments, and/or colleges etc.), families, and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Strong candidates will foreground issues of equity and inclusivity in their research, and strive to understand how to better support learning and achievement for historically marginalized learners.

We invite candidates who bring critical theoretical and methodological expertise to our existing faculty and school. Ideal candidates should demonstrate experience in applying qualitative and/or quantitative methods to contribute a deeper understanding of how education creates advantages and disadvantages for individuals and groups in the United States.

Candidates should possess an exemplary record of scholarly accomplishment commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor and the demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues. . The successful candidate will have experience mentoring and training doctoral students for careers in academia and research organizations as well as a commitment to teaching undergraduate and/or professional degree students.

Application and Review
Full consideration will be given to complete applications received by December 4, 2019, but screening will continue until the position is filled. Completed applications should include:
• a cover letter explaining research interests
• curriculum vitae
• a separate teaching statement
• a separate statement that addresses past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion
• 3 relevant publications/papers
