POSITION DESCRIPTION
Dr. Brandy Lipton is seeking applications for an Associate Specialist/Data Scientist to join the Department of Health, Society, and Behavior within the University of California, Irvine’s Program in Public Health. The Associate Specialist would work closely with Dr. Lipton on a variety of projects that examine the effects of public policies on population health and well-being using quasi-experimental research methods. This position is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

Background: The Associate Specialist will be expected to contribute to research examining the impacts of state-level Medicaid policies using a variety of survey and administrative data sources (e.g., Medicaid claims data). Candidates for this position should have experience in working with large datasets including data cleaning, coding, and statistical analysis. There will be opportunities to collaborate on manuscripts intended for publication in high-impact policy, economics, and medical journals. The start date for the appointment is negotiable but is anticipated to be in Spring or Summer 2024. The position is contingent on funding availability but is intended to be a long-term role. Remote work is possible and negotiable, but some in-person presence is strongly preferred.

Specific Duties:

-Assist with data cleaning, coding, and statistical analysis in Stata or other statistical programs using large micro-level and population-level datasets.

-Perform bivariate and multivariate analyses

-Prepare tables of descriptive statistics and publication-quality figures

-Attend regular project meetings and effectively communicate statistical results

-Contribute to grant and manuscript development

-Contribute to applications for restricted datasets

-Contribute to Institutional Review Board protocols

-Assist in compiling and analyzing state-level policies, including conducting searches on the WestLaw legal database

-Work closely with junior student team members to improve research products

-Provide citation management, proofreading, code review, and presentation development on an as-needed basis

Required Qualifications:
-Master’s degree in economics, Health Policy, Public Policy, Public Health, or other related social, behavioral, or population science field

-Project management skills

-Strong quantitative data analysis skills

-Fluency in Stata, SAS, or R

Preferred Qualifications (not required):
-PhD degree in Economics, Health Policy, Public Policy, Public Health, or other related social, behavioral, or population science health field

-Experience in analyzing Medicaid claims data is a strong plus

-Familiarity with quasi-experimental research methods

-Fluency in Stata

-Background in US Health Policy including the Medicaid program
