Position description

Applicants are invited to apply for a full-time postdoctoral position in the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine to support a NSF-funded participatory design project on environmental engineering and climate justice education at the high-school level. The research team will co-design with high-school students, teachers, and community members an environmental engineering curriculum centered on systems thinking and critical science agency. The curriculum will be tested in partner teachers’ classrooms and research will examine both student learning outcomes and co-design practices.

Initial appointment is for two years, with possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding. Anticipated start date can be January 8, 2024, or a date afterwards, contingent on the availability of the applicant.

Responsibilities include engaging in developing research-practice partnerships with partner high schools, county office of education, and community organizations.
Research tasks include:
● conducting design-based implementation research (DBIR),
● facilitating participatory science experiences with high-school students, teachers, and community members;
● collecting observational, survey, and interview data;
● analyzing data qualitatively and through mixed-methods approaches;

● presenting findings at research and practitioner conferences and at community events;
● co-authoring publications with research team and partners;
● consulting with and mentoring teams of graduate and undergraduate students;
● coordinating projects’ activities, including scheduling and facilitating meetings, assigning tasks and supporting research assistants, and managing communication among partners.

Requirements: Candidates must possess
● A Ph.D. in Education or a related field by the time of appointment;
● Experience in equity-oriented participatory approaches to research;
● Expertise in DBIR methodologies, or other qualitative and mixed methods research approaches;
● Knowledge of science education, engineering education, or STEM education research
● Commitment to equity-focused research;
● Expertise in academic writing and editing;
● Some experience in mentoring students and coordinating and leading research.

Desirable Qualifications:
● Experience working with school and community partners
● Expertise in learning sciences
● Fluency in Spanish language

Salary: The salary range is $64,480-$77,327 annually.
