Position description

Assistant Professor Position in Experimental Materials Research at University of California, Irvine

Job Description
The University of California, Irvine (UCI), seeks to fill a faculty position at assistant professor rank in experimental materials science research. The ideal candidate would lead dynamic research in the field of functional materials synthesis and thin film growth with atomic scale control, using techniques such as molecular beam epitaxy, pulsed laser deposition, chemical vapor deposition, sputtering, etc. This position will be located in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

UCI has a vibrant and collaborative research environment in materials science, anchored by the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC, https://ccam.uci.edu/), which is supported by the National Science Foundation. Within this academic milieu, prospective candidates will find plentiful opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration and professional growth.

Over the past decade, UCI has made substantial investments to establish a diverse array of cutting-edge, open-access user facilities, including the world-class Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEMs). These facilities provide state-of-the-art tools and capabilities for characterizing the structure, composition, and functional properties of materials with sub-angstrom spatial resolution. These resources, hosted within the Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI, https://imri.uci.edu/), form a robust and essential foundation for the exploration, comprehension, and application of a wide range of material systems.

The University of California is one of the premier public university systems in the world. UC Irvine is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), is ranked as a top ten public university by U.S. News and World Report, and was identified by the New York Times as No. 1 among U.S. universities that do the most for low-income students. UCI is a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). These federal designations align with UCI’s aspiration to be a national leader and global model of inclusive excellence. We seek faculty who are committed to inclusive excellence as well as diverse faculty who will be role models for our students. UCI is located in Orange County, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 45 miles south of Los Angeles. Irvine offers a very pleasant year-round climate, numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, and one of the highest-ranked public-school systems in the nation.
