Position description
The Research Justice Shop at UC Irvine’s Newkirk Center for Science & Society is hiring an Academic Coordinator to support establishment of the Wildland-Urban Interface Climate Action Network (WUICAN). The appointment is a career position at 100% time, with a comprehensive benefits package. Salary is based on UCI salary scales and dependent on qualifications and experience.
With funding from the California Climate Action grant program, WUICAN builds a network of environmental justice organizations, academic partners, and Tribal nations to address the impacts of climate change on California’s landscapes and people while promoting community resilience to climate change. The Academic Coordinator will work closely with a diverse team of faculty, academic staff, community leaders, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars to establish the WUICAN network. The responsibilities of this position include:
-Support diverse teams in co-designing research related to the needs of communities impacted by climate change in California landscapes.
-Facilitate communication and collaboration with environmental justice organizations, Indigenous communities, and academics from multiple disciplines, including environmental science, law, social science, and the humanities..
-Write reports and create media that describe project activities and outcomes.
-Give presentations to public and academic audiences about WUICAN.
-Organize and lead on logistics for WUICAN meetings, conferences, and policy design workshops.
-Schedule and facilitate meetings with program leaders, partners, and participants in virtual, university, and community venues.
-Co-design and manage educational programming and fellowship support for graduate, undergraduate, and K-12 students.
-Contribute to program evaluation and assessment.

Qualifications
Masters-level degree in social science, environmental science, public policy, management, communications, or a related discipline conferred by December 1, 2023
Desired qualifications
Doctoral degree in social science, environmental science, law, environmental policy, management, communications, or a related discipline conferred by December 1, 2023; or at least 3 years of relevant experience beyond the Master's degree
Demonstrated ability and experience working independently
Demonstrated ability and experience working as a member of cross-disciplinary team
Demonstrated abilities in oral and written communication, organization, leadership, mentoring, conflict resolution, relationship building, and cultural awareness
Experience with consensus building, facilitation, and/or collaborative problem-solving
Experience managing complex, multidisciplinary projects
Professional experience, training, or strong interest in learning about team science
Experience with community-based research practice and methods
Interest in climate science, ecology, environmental law and policy, climate policy, environmental justice, conservation, restoration, and/or resource management
