Position description

The Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position under the supervision of Professor Donald Hoffman.. The Postdoctoral Scholar will join a small team of scientists, mathematicians and philosophers, led by Hoffman, in search for mathematical structures and processes beyond space-time, which can project via statistical sampling into the physical world of matter and energy and associated cognitive properties. A strong foundation in mathematics and mathematical statistics (Markov Chains and associated information theoretic concepts) and familiarity with quantum field theory will be an asset in this position. No previous knowledge of cognitive science is necessary. The primary goal of the team is the mathematical analysis of Markovian dynamical systems and their relationship to positive Grassmannians, cluster algebras, decorated permutations, amplituhedra and other positive geometries beyond spacetime.

The selected Postdoctoral Scholar will be expected to:

  • Prove theorems regarding the relationships between Markovian dynamical systems and the other mathematical structures mentioned above.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals / conferences.
  • Disseminate research results to the broader scientific community in conferences and seminars.
  • Collaborate and integrate with group members.
