Neurocritical Care/Neurointensivist
The University of California, Irvine Medical Center (UCIMC) is a nationally recognized clinical and academic teaching hospital in Orange, CA with a new hospital to open 2025 in Irvine, CA near the University’s main campus. We invite applications for the position of neurointensivist in the Division of Neurocritical Care, Department of Neurology. The clinical training includes a 12 unit dedicated neurointensive care unit (NICU) in addition to the 12-bed trauma surgical intensive care unit. There are additional intensive care units (ICU) with nursing trained in neurological care for overflow of both neurological and trauma patients. We are the only Level I Trauma Center in Orange County, covering a population of 3.128 million residents plus millions of tourists annually. We are a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the first in Orange County, and ranked as one of the top 100 hospitals in the US for stroke care by healthgrades and ASA Gold Health Plus Achievement Award. Neurocritical care faculty work closely with a team of cerebrovascular neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, and Vascular Neurologists to offer the best care possible to our patients. Our patient population encompasses a diverse range of disease processes and patients in our closed-model unit that is run exclusively by neurocritical care boarded neurointensivists.
Candidates must be BC/BE in neurology with fellowship training in Neurocritical Care to qualify for ABPN or UCNS certification in Neurocritical Care and be eligible for an unrestricted license in the State of California.
Primary responsibilities of the position include expanding and innovating in inpatient and limited outpatient TBI follow-up clinical care; teaching medical students, residents, and fellows; developing research and creative work; and providing university/public service. Clinical duties encompass but are not limited to leading primary intensive care team to care for patients with acute brain and spinal cord injury, working in multidisciplinary team and consulting on other critical care patients with acute neurological issues, management of ventilator and all general critical care issues, performance and supervision of procedures including but not limited to intubation, arterial line placement, central venous catheter placement, lumbar punctures, and bronchoscopy.
The full-time academic appointment may be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level in the Health Sciences Clinical or Clinical X series, depending on experience and extent of research effort. Clinical X appointments confer membership in the UCI Academic Senate.
Criteria for the Professor of Clinical "X" Series:The incumbent will be expected to conduct substantial research; provide patient care; teach fellows, residents, and medical students; and perform public and University service. Excellent teaching is an essential criteria for appointment in this series.
Criteria for the Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series: The incumbent will be expected to teach fellows, residents, and medical students; provide patient care; contribute to scholarly activities; and provide public and University service.

Qualifications
Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree and be Board certified/Board eligible in Neurocritical Care or equivalent who are eligible for licensure by the California Medical Board. Candidates must have demonstrated capabilities for teaching, professional service and/or research suitable to the HS Clinical Professor series.
The incumbent will participate in patient care, teach residents and students, perform university and public service, and demonstrate professional competency and activity. Positions are dependent upon funding. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointments are for one year and renewal is based on availability of support.
