Position description

Dr.Thomas Lane, Chancellor’s Professor and Director of the Center for Virus Research at the University of California, Irvine, is seeking two postdoctoral fellows for immediate hire for the coming year. The position is funded by the NIH and the Alzheimer’s Association. Research projects will focus on examining how infection of susceptible mice with coronaviruses (CoV) – either neuroadapted murine CoV’s or SARS-CoV-2 – impacts neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and neurologic function. Our laboratory employs a variety of sophisticated molecular and cellular approaches to assess mechanisms associated with disease and host defense following infection.

We are seeking highly creative and motivated researcher for a postdoc position in the following areas of research:

1) Explore how infection of novel transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) impacts the severity of neuropathology in response to intranasal infection with SARS-CoV-2 and identify potential mechanisms by which this occurs. This work is funded by the Alzheimer’s Association.

2) Identify novel pathways contributing to both demyelination and remyelination in response to infection of susceptible mice with the neuroadapted JHM strain of mouse hepatitis virus (JHMV). An emphasis on both projects will be on using single cell RNA sequencing, single nuclear RNA sequencing, and spatial transcriptomics/ proteomics to identify.

In addition to lab funding, qualified candidates may also apply for support through T32 institutional training grant mechanisms, postdoc NRSA, and collaborative projects. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. Salary is based on the UC academic salary scale for postdocs commensurate with experience. Start date is flexible. Initial appointment is for 2 years at 100% time, with a comprehensive benefits package. Continuation will be based on performance and availability of funding.
