Position description
Professor J.J. Emerson in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology invites applications for a research assistant in the Junior Specialist series. Research in the Emerson Lab (https://emersonlab.org/) studies evolution, genetics, and genomics. This position is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the evolution of genome structure. The position will be based at UC-Irvine.
The successful applicant will support the project by implementing experimental protocols, maintaining lab equipment, and collecting data. Additional duties will include logistics and lab management (such as ordering supplies, supervising safety inspections), propagating Drosophila stocks, constructing population cages, and data management. The position involves coordination with project collaborators, including students and faculty at UCI and other universities.
Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in biology, especially genetics, genomics, evolution, or related fields completed by the time of appointment; previous experience with Drosophila research; strong organizational, teamwork, and communication skills; capacity to regularly work full days at a lab bench; commitment to promoting lab safety, best practices, and the lab’s values of inclusion and diversity.
Desirable qualifications include experience with genomics and/or molecular biology lab protocols; and experience with data management.
Initial appointment is for one year with anticipated extension for up to 2 years total pending satisfactory performance. Appointment is expected to be at Junior Specialist Step I (salary scales are online at ttps://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2024-25/july-2024-scales/t24-b.pdf).
