Position description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for 1-2 postdoctoral position(s) to work with Dr. Vivian U. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to lead projects related to Dr. U's NSF and/or NASA ADSPS programs, including but not limited to detailed comparisons of hydrodynamic simulations of multiphase feedback in galaxy mergers to IFU data, generation of mock galaxy catalogs with far-IR line properties studied with appropriate Cloudy photoionization models, exploration of obscured and dual / binary AGN across cosmic epochs, etc. In addition, the candidate(s) may have input on the nature and direction of ongoing projects within the group, and opportunities to mentor undergraduate students. Preference may be given to those with prior experience with IFU data, simulations, JWST technicalities, and/or far-IR spectroscopy, but all exceptional candidates will be considered.

The successful applicant(s) will have access to world class telescopes and instruments through the UC Observatories. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is committed to a culture of inclusivity, and the successful candidates will share this vision. We strongly encourage academically and culturally diverse scholars to apply.

The position(s) will start between Spring and Fall of 2025 — exact start date is negotiable — and will initially be for two years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, contingent upon funding availability and satisfactory annual progress evaluations. The successful applicant should hold a PhD in astronomy, physics, or a related discipline by the start date of the appointment.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, CV (with publication list), research statement, and contact information for three references to UCI's online application system at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF09377. Letters of references will be requested through the online system and should be received by the application deadline.

Applications received by December 13, 2024 will receive full considerations; late applications will be accepted until the position is filled. General inquiries about this position may be directed to vivianu@uci.edu.
