Position description

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering invites applications for a possible full-time Unit 18 faculty position to teach Academic English/ESL during 2025-2026. The position is administered by UCI and the teaching will be at the Dalian University of Technology (DUT) in Dalian, China within the DUT-UCI Joint Program. The DUT-UCI Joint Program in Mechanical Engineering is established by UCI and DUT, with students instructed by faculty from both universities. All teaching and assessment of the Core Curriculum will be carried out in English and with the American style of teaching and assessment, which encourages students to build independent learning skills. Dalian University of Technology (DUT) is a comprehensive public institute, renowned as one of the top universities in China. DUT has three campuses with 81 well-developed disciplines across 27 schools, providing rich resources for about 4,500 faculty and staff, and 50,000 students. DUT resides in Dalian, a beautiful modern coastal city in the Liaoning Province, located in the northeastern region of China. The city is about 1.5-hours from Beijing, China, and 1.5-hour from Seoul, South Korea, traveling by air. Relocation will be necessary; travel expenses are included.

The individual is expected to teach a full-teaching load (two classes per quarter with up to 34 students per class, or three classes per quarter with up to 23 students per class) of Academic English/ESL courses each year. Courses are equivalent to the levels of UCI’s Academic English 23 and Academic English 20.
If selected, the first-time School of Engineering appointee will receive a one-year appointment with the possibility of subsequent 2-year appointment renewals, based on a performance evaluation. Annual full-time salaries begin at $68,247, with benefits available to appointees who meet eligibility requirements (for more info go to: http://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/compensation-and-benefits/eligibility/index.html). Salary will be commensurate based on degree and experience.

The service period for the academic year is according to the DUT academic calendar (Fall: Beginning of September to Mid-November; Winter: End of Feb - Mid May; Spring: Mid May – End of July). The intent is to hire the appointee to teach all three quarters on a year-round contract with pay period from 7/1/2025-6/30/2026. Depending on the circumstances, options may be available for quarter-by-quarter appointment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
• Master’s degree in English, TESOL or Applied Linguistics, or in a closely-related field with a TESL/TEFL/TESOL certificate.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching a wide range of Academic English/ESL (IEP) levels and skills
• Willing to relocate to China
Preferred
• Minimum three years of successful ESL teaching experience including Academic English/intensive English or similar with international students Proficiency in a second language
• Experience with living abroad
• Experience with Learning Management Systems (Canvas)
• Experience teaching English for academic study or other specific purposes
