Teaching and Professional Responsibilities and Expectations
Clinical teaching is essential to the University’s interns, residents, fellows, and postdoctoral scholars. Faculty responsibilities include tutorial instruction, carried on amid the demands of patient care and usually characterized by multiple demands on the teacher to cope with unpredictably varied problems, patient needs, and the necessity of preparing the students to exercise judgement and/or take action. Mentoring is a component of teaching, but it does not replace the provision of intensive tutorial instruction. Mentoring may focus directly on scholarly activity or on efforts to create conditions that promote scholarly activities. The faculty share responsibilities at UCI Medical Center-Orange and on the UC Irvine main campus. Faculty are expected to maintain medical staff privileges at UCI Medical Center. All faculty work regularly with the residents and certified registered nurse anesthetists. Additionally, faculty rotate doing their own cases.

Research, Scholarly, Creative Activity Responsibilities and Expectations
The Department is actively expanding its research enterprise across perioperative care, regional anesthesia, and trauma surgery. Faculty members are expected to maintain a productive, independent research program that advances knowledge in one or more of these areas and contribute meaningfully to the department's scholarly mission.

Experience in clinical outcomes research, such as quality improvement, patient safety, or comparative effectiveness, and familiarity with evidence synthesis methodologies (systematic reviews, meta-analyses) are welcomed. A history of grant funding from federal, foundation, or industry sources is viewed favorably, and successful candidates will be encouraged to pursue external funding opportunities that align with departmental research priorities.

The department places particular emphasis on interdisciplinary and collaborative scholarship. Candidates who have established or contributed to research partnerships spanning anesthesiology and orthopaedic trauma surgery are encouraged to apply. Established productive collaborations with orthopaedic trauma surgeons, regional and acute pain anesthesiologists, outcomes researchers, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians desired.

Faculty will be supported by departmental resources, mentorship, and protected research time commensurate with their academic appointment and research focus. Expectations for research productivity will be defined in consultation with department leadership and aligned with the candidate's track record, interests, and career trajectory.

University and Public Service Responsibilities and Expectations
The Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care is expected to participate in service outside of their teaching and clinical duties to the Department, the School of Medicine, and the University as a whole with particular attention to service that is directly related to their professional expertise and achievements.

Clinician researchers interested in pursuing an academic career in Anesthesiology and related specialties will be given the opportunity to grow in a dynamic department.
