Position description

One full-time assistant project scientist is needed at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). The responsibilities of this position will involve overseeing projects and conducting research focused on language assessment, use, and intervention with African American children who speak African American English (AAE) The assistant project scientist will be affiliated with UCI’s School of Education. This is a 1-year position (with possibility of renewal) with a proposed start date of April 1, 2026 (negotiable).

The assistant project scientist will lead data management, train research assistants in data cleaning protocols, data analysis, and data archiving plans for all projects in the Language Variation and Academic Success (LVAS) lab. They will take the lead on development of an archival database of LVAS projects and participate in writing manuscripts for publication. In addition, the assistant project scientist will join a project team of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates conducting a range of studies designed to examine patterns of performance of typically developing African American children’s language, literacy, and mathematics skills. The assistant project scientist will be involved with mentoring and supervision of graduate and undergraduate students. Scholarly activities will include assisting with designing and implementing research projects, collaborating and communicating with the project co-investigators, seeking IRB approval, overseeing active data collection projects, analyzing data, writing manuscripts for publication and presentation, and documenting information on the project(s).

Requirements:
Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Education or a related field by the start date of the position; have prior expertise in leading research projects; expertise in research design and methodology including psychometrics; excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; a successful record of publication and presentations; and the ability to work well with diverse teams. Candidates must have extensive working knowledge of African American English, including familiarity with language and literacy assessment.
