Position description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for a Professor of Practice in the Adjunct Professor series. This position is intended for leaders in their fields who are expert members of civil and environmental engineering professional communities.

The successful candidate will serve as a leader in advancing the integration of professional practice within the Department’s teaching mission and student experience. They will bring a distinguished record of executive leadership in civil and environmental engineering practice and a sustained commitment to fostering the professional development of the next generation of civil and environmental engineers.

This role focuses on preparing students for professional careers, with emphasis on developing creativity, initiative, business acumen, and a strong sense of professional responsibility. The successful candidate will also foster students’ ability to communicate ideas clearly and persuasively, both orally and in writing, while modeling the confidence and presence required to lead, influence, and collaborate in engineering practice.

The Professor of Practice will engage broadly with undergraduate and graduate students and serve as an accessible and influential professional-practice presence within the civil and environmental programs. The successful candidate will contribute primarily to teaching and mentorship, advancing practice-informed scholarship and engagement, with responsibilities aligned accordingly. Across all areas, the Professor of Practice will contribute to a cohesive, practice-oriented educational environment and will demonstrate meaningful engagement in teaching, professional activity, scholarly contribution, and service.

The role will also include sustained engagement with industry and alumni to expand and strengthen mentorship activities, internship programs, experiential learning, and job placement opportunities.

Appointment Details
This is a non-Senate, term appointment for an initial period of up to three years. The position is renewable based on performance and programmatic needs. The appointment percentage will be approximately 10% and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Distinguished record of professional achievement and executive leadership in civil and environmental engineering practice
  • Demonstrated commitment to student mentorship, professional development, and engineering education
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil and/or environmental engineering, construction management, or a similar area.
  • Professional licensure (PE) or equivalent professional standing
