Position overview

Salary range: Total Negotiated Salary (TNS) calculation includes AAMC salary benchmarks for Cardiac Surgery ranging from $531,212 to $830,149. The posted UC salary scales set the base pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. This position includes in the health sciences compensation plan, which provides eligibility for additional compensation.

Position description

The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine is seeking an Academic Adult Cardiac Surgeon to join its growing academic cardiovascular program. This position is primarily focused on adult cardiac surgery, including coronary, valve, and aortic surgery, with supportive participation in heart transplantation as part of a shared call schedule. This position will be in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor Series at the Assistant, Associate Professor, or Professor Level.

This role offers an opportunity to practice broad-based adult cardiac surgery within an established academic cardiac surgery program, while contributing to the growth, quality, and clinical excellence of select advanced programs, including heart transplantation and aortic surgery. Early-career surgeons and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Program Overview

The Division of Cardiac Surgery is a core component of UCI Health Heart and Vascular Institute. The division is committed to excellence in patient-centered care through advanced surgical techniques, innovative technologies, and multidisciplinary collaboration with cardiology, advanced heart failure, critical care, anesthesia, vascular surgery, and allied health teams.

UCI Health maintains an established and expanding adult cardiac surgery program with expertise in:
• Coronary artery bypass grafting and complex coronary revascularization
• Minimally invasive valve surgery
• Adult congenital cardiac surgery
• Aortic and complex adult cardiac procedures

The institution also supports a destination LVAD program and is developing a heart transplant program, with transplant-related responsibilities limited to surgical care and shared call participation.

The cardiovascular service line features state-of-the-art hybrid operating rooms and advanced structural heart interventions, including TAVR, Mitral and Tricuspid valve TEER, tricuspid valve replacement, and transcatheter LAA closure. UCI is a STEMI receiving center and has an advanced EP program. There is a dedicated vascular emergency response team available around the clock and we are supported by a fully staffed, 24/7 in-house CVICU and a robust Advanced Practice Provider team that delivers comprehensive care across both inpatient and outpatient settings.

UCI Medical Center serves as the region’s only academic and tertiary referral center, providing comprehensive care for complex cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgical patients.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Provide comprehensive adult cardiac surgical care, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, and other complex adult cardiac procedures.
• Participate in and support the growth of the aortic surgery program, including operative management and protocol development for aortic pathology.
• Share responsibility for general adult cardiac surgery call, structured equitably among faculty.
• Collaborate closely with cardiology, critical care, anesthesia, perfusion, nursing, and APP teams to deliver multidisciplinary care.
• Participate in general adult cardiac surgery call, shared equitably among faculty; transplant-related duties will account for less than 25% of overall call responsibilities.

Teaching and Education

• Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and Advanced Practice Providers in adult cardiac surgery.
• Participate in divisional conferences, case reviews, and bedside teaching.
• Contribute to the academic mission through professionalism, mentorship, and clinical excellence.

Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement

• Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives across adult cardiac surgery, including outcomes review and care standardization.
• Engage in morbidity and mortality conferences and data-driven quality improvement aligned with STS and institutional benchmarks.
• Support quality and safety initiative related to transplant recipient care as applicable.

Research and Scholarly Activity

• Engage in scholarly activity aligned with adult cardiac surgery, aortic disease, outcomes research, or quality improvement.
• Participate in clinical research, registry participation, or collaborative academic projects.
• Contribute to publications, presentations, or educational scholarship consistent with academic appointment.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• MD, DO, or international medical degree (e.g. MBBS) from an accredited institution.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited or internationally recognized cardiothoracic surgery training program
• Board certified or board eligible in Thoracic Surgery; or eligible and willing to obtain ABTS certification.
• Training and clinical experience in adult cardiac surgery, including CABG and valve surgery
• Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of California.
