The Department of Informatics in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for an open rank position in Human–Computer Interaction.

We seek a colleague whose scholarship is rooted in building and deploying real, working systems, but also who recognizes that they are embedded in systems of values, institutions, societies, and cultures, and who centers those considerations in their work. An ideal candidate will be equally comfortable advancing interactive technologies as exploring questions of their design, values, policy, and societal impact, and leading a group of researchers to do the same.

The Department of Informatics is a highly interdisciplinary community, with faculty expertise spanning HCI, software engineering, design, game studies, education, health informatics, digital accessibility, media arts, organizational studies, and psychology. With six CHI Academy members among our faculty, the department is internationally recognized for innovative research and education in HCI as well as in related fields. Through this recruitment, we aim to further strengthen the department’s reputation for leadership and innovation across our diverse areas of expertise.

UC Irvine’s Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) is home to the departments of Computer Science, Informatics, and Statistics. The school’s mission is to lead innovation in human-centered information and computing technologies, understand their economic and social significance, and develop an educated workforce to further advance technology. The Department of Informatics offers six graduate programs and four undergraduate degrees, serving more than 80 Ph.D. students, 200 master’s students, and 1,200 undergraduates, supported by more than 30 full-time faculty and four full-time lecturers. The School of ICS is home to approximately 400 doctoral students, 600 master’s students, 4,000 undergraduates, 100 faculty members, and 85 staff, making it the largest computing program within the UC system and one of the largest in the nation, providing exceptional opportunities for discovery and learning in all areas of information and computer sciences.
The search is comprehensive and we encourage applicants from a broad range of disciplines to apply. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field. Applicants are required to have demonstrated skills in research and teaching.

Advancement through the Professor ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2–3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.
