Position description
The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, is seeking a Chairperson to lead the Department of Clinical Pharmacy Practice. The Chair reports to the Dean and provides leadership for the department's teaching, research, clinical, and service missions while also holding a faculty appointment as an Associate/Full Professor of Clinical Pharmacy Practice (Clin X) or a tenured Associate/Full Professor. This posting is for the tenured Professor series; the related Clinical X posting is available here: JPF10390. Applicants should apply to the series that best aligns with their qualifications and experience. Only one individual will be selected to serve as Department Chair, and there is no preference between the Clinical X and tenured applicant pools. Faculty appointment will be made at a professorial rank commensurate with the candidate's academic qualifications and experience.
The Department of Clinical Pharmacy Practice offers unparalleled training for future careers in pharmacy, preparing students both in the classroom and in clinical settings to improve the health and well-being of society. Its 20 faculty members conduct collaborative research across a broad range of areas, including clinical trials, medication adherence, pharmacokinetics, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacogenomics, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacy practice, and outcomes research.
Ladder-rank faculty (Professors), who are members of the Academic Senate, are expected to maintain an independent and robust research program, teach, and provide University and public service (see APM220). Teaching responsibilities may include classroom and laboratory instruction, with an emphasis on clinical education for PharmD students.
At UC Irvine, a department chair is expected to provide visionary leadership across all aspects of the department, including long-range planning, budgeting, academic programs, personnel, scholarship and growth of extramurally funded programs, and fundraising. The chair also represents and advocates for the department at the school and campus levels. The Chair is expected to be an active scholar and researcher who will continue to advance their scholarly program and make meaningful contributions to research while serving as Chair. The successful candidate should view the role as both an academic leadership position and an opportunity to contribute actively to the intellectual and research mission of the department. Within the department, the chair coordinates and facilitates shared faculty responsibilities, including academic personnel reviews, teaching assignments, committee appointments, mentoring, faculty recruitment and retention, and award nominations, while promoting equity and excellence (see APM 245).
Applicants must possess a Ph.D., M.D., PharmD or equivalent degree. Preferred qualifications include prior academic administration experience, track record of extramural funding, prior faculty mentoring experience, national recognition in their field, and established expertise in pharmacy education.
