Position description
The Nhữ Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for an Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) position in Quantum and Semiconductor Engineering, with an anticipated start in July 2027. Advances in quantum computing, sensing, and communications increasingly hinge on engineered semiconductor platforms, heterogeneous integration, and the device/circuit infrastructure that connects quantum hardware to scalable systems. The new position will complement and strengthen the department’s broader growth areas, including electromagnetics (photonics, RF, and microwave systems), quantum devices, III-V semiconductors, nanotechnology, and hardware-software integrated systems.
The department seeks candidates who will build a high-visibility, externally funded research program at the intersection of quantum technologies and semiconductor engineering and catalyze collaborations spanning devices, circuits, photonics, electromagnetics, communications, computer engineering, and adjacent disciplines. Applicants with expertise across experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches are welcome. Strong fits include research that advances scalable quantum platforms and the enabling device/circuit stack, such as qubit-electronics co-design; cryo-CMOS and cryogenic RF control/readout hardware; III-V quantum electronics; superconducting, spin, photonic, or atomic implementations; hybrid quantum-microsystem integration and cross-domain transduction; quantum technology, sensing and communication; and heterogeneous integration and advanced packaging strategies that translate laboratory demonstrations into robust, manufacturable, and deployable quantum technologies.
The position is expected to strengthen campus-scale initiatives and shared research infrastructure, including active engagement with the UCI Eddleman Quantum Institute, the Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility (INRF), and the UCI Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI). The successful candidate will help position EECS for multi-investigator center-scale proposals and major collaborative efforts aligned with federal critical and emerging technology priorities in quantum information science and semiconductors. In addition to building a strong independent program, the new faculty member will be encouraged to link UCI’s strengths in materials, nanofabrication, photonics, RF/microwaves, communication and computing into integrated quantum and semiconductor research directions.
As a central component, the position requires teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses in areas such as quantum engineering, semiconductor devices, nanofabrication, microelectronics, and/or photonics, and is expected to incorporate hands-on laboratory experiences where appropriate. Bridging research and curriculum, the successful candidate will train students to work across quantum-classical interfaces and prepare graduates to lead in next-generation quantum and semiconductor technology industries.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field by the start date.

Qualifications
Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field from an accredited university.
