Position description

The Salton Sea Initiative at the University of California, Irvine, invites applications for the full-time position of Academic Coordinator I. The Salton Sea Initiative seeks to harness the campus’ research, teaching, and service resources to address sustainability challenges facing the Salton Sea region. Addressing the sustainability challenges at the Salton Sea presents a multi-faceted, long term, and critical issue in Southern California’s future. The solutions pioneered at the Sea could inform actions of similarly situated communities across the globe. The campus-wide Initiative has attracted the interest of over twenty faculty members and their students offering expertise in engineering, biology, public health, economics, real estate, regional planning, history, and law. While our initial task is to continue to build relationships in the desert, we are also actively researching processes that may be helpful in addressing engineering, biological, legal and planning issues. In this work, rather than advocate any one particular path forward, we seek to use our campus strengths to provide technical assistance through research expertise, to open up public discourse, and to strengthen the capacity of relevant stakeholders to engage the resources necessary to address these problems.

Under the direction of the Salton Sea Initiative Director, the Academic Coordinator will develop the Initiative’s short and medium-term plans in conjunction with relevant faculty and staff. The Academic Coordinator will facilitate execution of the plan on campus and in the region. On campus, the Academic Coordinator will convene faculty from multiple disciplines, facilitate collaboration, connect graduate and undergraduate students with research and outreach opportunities, and represent the Initiative at campus events and meetings. In the Salton Sea region, the Academic Coordinator will help establish relationships with key relevant stakeholders, and organize and execute a series of co-created projects. The Academic Coordinator will draft documentation of the Initiative’s campus and regional work for use in academic and popular media as well as for the Initiative website and grant submissions.

Requirements include: Advanced degree in field relevant to community engagement in sustainability. Ability and willingness to travel monthly and occasionally stay overnight in the Salton Sea region. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Demonstrated facilitation and/or mediation skills. Ability to coordinate multiple research, teaching and outreach projects simultaneously. Media and grant writing experience. Ability to communicate and work with faculty and students in an academic environment. Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse populations and the public. Proficiency in Spanish (preferred, but not required)

Salary is $46,644 plus benefits.
